Boy, 8, dies after statue falls on him at luxury hotel
An 8-year-old boy has died after a towering statue displayed at a luxury Arizona hotel fell on him.
Authorities said the boy died after part of the concrete statue at the Arizona Biltmore Resort in Phoenix toppled over and crushed him on Saturday.
Phoenix Fire Captain Todd Keller said the child suffered a head injury.
He was rushed to hospital where he later died.
The Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office found the primary cause of death was complications of blunt force trauma to the head.
Authorities are working to determine what caused the statue to fall. Phoenix police said there were no signs of foul play.
“We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred at the hotel,” a spokesperson for the Arizona Biltmore Resort said.
“Our top priority is the safety and security of our guests, and our thoughts are with the family impacted by today’s events.”
The 95-year-old hotel was inspired by architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation the child’s death was “truly heartbreaking.”
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic accident, and our heartfelt condolences are with the family during this unimaginably difficult time,” Foundation spokesperson Henry Hendrix said,
The 19 “Solemn Sprite” statues are displayed on the 39-acre hotel’s grounds.
They were inspired by Wright’s Midway Garden project from 1913 to 1914.
The Arizona Biltmore said on its website that the statues were gifted to the hotel in 1985.
“Standing as a testament to Wright’s progressive architectural style, the sprites also symbolize the protection of the earth and its abundance,” the hotel said.
