2 sons of Mexican drug lord ‘El Chapo’ are negotiating plea cope with US prosecutors, attorneys say

Two sons of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, considered one of Mexico’s most infamous cartel leaders, are in plea negotiations with the U.S. authorities over sweeping drug-trafficking prices, attorneys mentioned Tuesday.

Joaquin Guzmán López, 38, lately started plea negotiations with federal prosecutors, attorneys confirmed in a Chicago courtroom. His brother Ovidio Guzmán López, 34, started plea negotiations in October, attorneys mentioned on the time.

Each brothers initially pleaded not responsible, and neither appeared on the transient listening to on Tuesday.

“We’d like a bit extra time,” Assistant U.S. Legal professional Andrew Erskine mentioned in courtroom. “We’re making an attempt to discover whether or not there could be a world decision.”

Lately, the brothers have led a faction of Mexico’s infamous Sinaloa cartel often known as the “Chapitos,” or little Chapos, that has been recognized as a foremost exporter of fentanyl to the U.S. 

In 2023, federal prosecutors unsealed sprawling indictments in opposition to dozens of members of the cartel, together with the brothers, in a fentanyl-trafficking investigation.

In July, Joaquin Guzmán López was arrested in a dramatic seize by U.S. authorities in Texas with Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, a longtime chief of the Sinaloa cartel.

Zambada has claimed that Joaquin Guzmán López kidnapped him and flew him aboard a non-public aircraft into the U.S., the place Joaquin Guzmán López surrendered to authorities.

The FBI alleges Zambada and Joaquin Guzmán López oversaw the trafficking of “tens of 1000’s of kilos of medicine into the USA, together with associated violence.” Zambada is due in courtroom in New York subsequent week.
